Whitewater rafting, biking, hiking and swimming in the nearby rivers are favorite summer activities. In winter, world class skiing at Sugar Bowl Ski Area is only an hour away; stay out of the snow and enjoy the shopping, dining and live entertainment that Grass Valley and Nevada City have to offer.
Built in 1890 by Mary Horan's sons on land belonging to the Horan family from the time of the earliest land records, Annie Horan’s stands to this day as a monument to the splendor that once was California’s richest hard rock gold mining town. Mary's husband, James, was a builder by trade and invested his earnings in many of the local mines in the period from 1852 through 1866. After completing work on Grass Valley’s first Catholic Church, James followed the lure of Nevada’s silver bonanza, and died shortly thereafter of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Mary deeded the home to her sons in 1893, and they in turn deeded it to their sister Annie in 1900. Annie had her brothers remodel the house to its present configuration and opened a boarding house and Catholic retreat, which she ran until 1954.
Annie Horan’s central Grass Valley location affords an easy stroll to the Main and Mill Street shopping area. There are restaurants and pubs aplenty within a few blocks. Frequent the same spots as notables such as authors Mark Twain and Bret Harte, as well as United States Presidents Grant, Harrison, and Cleveland! The nearby Empire Mine State Park is a frequent destination. Nevada County Fairgrounds are nearby. Annie Horan's Bed and Breakfast is a member of the Grass Valley and Nevada City Chamber of Commerce as well as the Historic Inns Grass Valley and Nevada City Association.
Despite its classic roots and Victorian beauty, Annie Horan's Bed & Breakfast has been retrofitted by the owners to include central air conditioning for all the guest rooms, as well as high-speed wireless internet access for full connectivity anywhere inside the house.
